Physical Theater Ensemble of Coastal Carolina University

CED is pleased to announce the return of the B.F.A. Physical Theater Ensemble of Coastal Carolina University whose students have created an original one act play entitled “Whispered Away”, telling the story of an iPad kid who, after endless doomsday scrolling, becomes exhausted and falls asleep. As he dreams, he is transported into the Amazon rainforest, where the animals and spirits living in and around a great tree whisper in his ear, warning him that cutting it down will destroy their home.

Inspired by Lynne Cherry’s The Great Kapok Tree , this production blends mask work, folklore, and environmental themes into an immersive theatrical experience exploring the human connection to nature and direct communication with the natural world. Appropriate for ages K+

Avery and Masa

Meet AVERY, a red panda ready for action, and MASA, a slow loris who is anything but slow. These two best friends set out to all corners of the planet to help other endangered species overcome challenges to their habitats and social structures, while having fun along the way.  This multi-level ecosystem engages audiences across a chapter book series, a children’s theatre show, and an animated cartoon in development.

Climate Conversations

An Interactive Art Exhibit by Wil & Maura Bosbyshell

Celebrate Earth Day 2025 beautifully and thoughtfully with a visit to Wil and Maura Bosbyshell’s Climate Conversations art exhibit.

Wil manages to make the vast climate challenges we face personal and relevant. His large-scale drawings of trees — the largest is over 6 feet tall–are mesmerizing in the level of detail they provide. The exhibit is interactive, inviting your participation. You can write a thought from your past and hang it on the memory tree. You can take a tree memory poster home with you.

Maura has been busy digitally manipulating her fiber art into textile patterns. Her fabric and wallpaper patterns begin with her art, as well as Wil’s art. “Our nature-inspired themes combine well, creating an art-forward collection of textile prints,” she says. Maura aims to bring natural motifs and imagery, along with nature’s sense of tranquility, to  interior settings.

 Upcycle Arts

Upcycle Arts is Charlotte’s first creative reuse center. Upcycling — or creative reuse — is turning unwanted or unused items into something more practical or valuable. Upcycle Arts collaborates with Charlotteans and local businesses to divert their materials from the landfill. Instead, those materials are made available to the community for use in new ways such as mixed media arts. Upcycle Arts will be leading an interactive arts activity from entirely upcycled materials!

Terra Forma

The Terra Forma series began in 2016, the work is born from a need to re-engage myself and others with our own sustenance, and natural systems of the earth.  I pull from from the dirt onsite and gather natural objects from our subliminal background, placing them into a designed foreground experience for the viewers.  I begin these terra forms as a sensing of place, and often nature existing within the urban environment. Making in places where others circulate ‘outside’ is a significant performative aspect to my work. I often place forms in high circulation areas and leave collected found materials where people feel comfortable adding to each Terra Form. I invite specific planed groups and pedestrians to work with me or refresh the work new foliage in the following days.  The experience is to be shared, changed and felt by others, with the hopes of inspiring a deeper engagement to the sophistication and balance of the natural world.  After years of separating ourselves with climate controlled lodging and impervious surfaces, this “Terra Forma” series seeks to encourage others to feel the air that is, the leaves that tremble, and the earth beneath our feet.

My post modern version of earth engagement is, in a sense, my own mash up past rituals like Navajo Sand painting, Tibetan Mandalas and making mud pies in the backyard as a child but I bring everyone into my sphere.
